Persona Non Grata
Collective Ping

Persona Non Grata is a lecture performance that unravels unfamiliar narratives of women to which the South Korean public has paid relatively little attention. A lecture performance combines dramaturgy and pedagogy, presenting a lecture as a work of performance and vice versa. The performative elements enable the viewer to engage with the subject not only intellectually but affectively as well, leading to a form of social participation.

The lecturer—or the performer—delivers her lecture in the form of speech, photographs, and video, during which numerous theatrical devices—sound, acting, and narration—intervene, providing an immersive experience unavailable in the conventional academic environment.

Persona Non Grata brings forward the voices of queer women, immigrants, refugees, and sex workers, challenging the mainstream feminist narrative. Through overlapping stories on a stage filled with diverse references, the audience experiences an engaging blend of performance and lecture, prompting them to confront complex issues raised during the performance.
